Book Haul

Letterbox Love (25)

Letterbox Love

Letterbox Love is a UK based feature where book bloggers showcase the books that they received that week, be they e-books, paperbacks, hardbacks or any other format. It is hosted by Lynsey from Narratively Speaking.

I’m getting absolutely useless at posting book hauls, and I always have such fun writing them too – I tend to post them all on my YouTube channel, but I’m going to try and alternate between the two from now on so that the blog gets a bit of attention too.

I’ve been very good lately and haven’t bought too much, but there are a few books I’ve missed out of past hauls for some reason and others I acquired recently. This haul will be a catch up of everything over the last few weeks to month and a half.

To Review:

Ever since hearing about it, My Second Life by Faye Bird has appealed to me and I can’t wait to get stuck in to it. It’s about a girl who has been born again and has to unravel a mystery that happened in her previous life – sounds awesome, doesn’t it?! Thank you, Usborne!

City of Halves by Lucy Inglis is described for fans of The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, and I’m a huge fan of her books so I’m looking forward to reading it when I’m in the mood for urban fantasy and the like. Thank you, Chicken House!

I absolutely adore Sophia Bennett’s books and I’m sure The Castle won’t be any different. Unlike her other books, which are cute contemporaries, this is more of a mystery-adventure type novel so I’m looking forward to seeing how it varies from Sophia’s other novels. Thank you, Chicken House!

Although it has been controversial, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity of reviewing Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige. I know based on the things that have emerged, which I won’t go into detail about here, that many people have chosen not to read it, but I wanted to read and review it so that those of you who do read it in the future or are curious about it can hear my thoughts. It’s a re-telling of The Wizard of Oz years later when Dorothy rules over Oz, and is very awesome so far. My review should be up in the next few weeks. Thank you, Harper 360!

I’ve been meaning to buy Geek Girl: Picture Perfect by Holly Smale for ages now, but haven’t done so until now. I completely adored the first two books, and the third instalment was no exception!

Excluding the glasses (which I made!), I bought all of these books in charity shops, and I am so excited about all of them. The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling was a super quick read which I managed to finish in under an hour. I enjoyed each of the stories a lot but I now miss all of the Harry Potter characters, especially Dumbledore.

The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion has been on my wishlist for ages now and I was going to buy it in Waterstones the other day but changed my mind at the last minute. I was ecstatic when I found this and I’m hoping to start it right away.

I started Looking for JJ by Anne Cassidy in April after borrowing it from the library but eventually had to take it back so never got around to finish it. Hopefully I’ll get to finish it off sometime over the summer!

Picture Me Gone by Meg Rosoff was a purchase with no thought behind it other than, ‘It’s Meg Rosoff! I can’t not buy it!’ I’ve never actually read anything by Meg before, even though I now own three of her books. Sometimes I just can’t resist…

Have you read any of these, or are you planning on doing so? What have you acquired lately? Let me know, and link me to your own hauls!

I’m planning to read the next instalment of Geek Girl as soon as I can. I also want to read Picture Me Gone soon. I want to read The Castle too. Great haul, Lucy!

I received Dorothy Must Die from the author *gulp*, for review. Anyway, while I was waiting for it to arrive I saw that there was a prequel eNovella, No Place Like Oz. It was either $1.99 or $2.99, so I bought it. Well, it is written like a Children’s chapter book, with Middle Grade vocabulary and YA content. It got sooooo boring I never finished it. Thank goodness DMD was no longer an ARC when I received it because, although I do plan on reading and reviewing it, No Place Like Oz turned me off so much it probably won’t be until I have absolutely no ARCs and no want-to-read books on my TBR list. I will be looking forward to what you think about it. It is the hardcover and it looks pretty on my book shelf no matter what happens. I found The Rosie Project on Kindle one day for cheap, so I have that too. Tweet when you are about to read it and I will start it with you.

I really want to read The Castle – I absolutely adore the Threads series! As for Tales of Beedle the Bard, I totally understand about it making you miss the characters. Ugh, I actually had a dream the other night from Hermione’s POV where I was spending time with Fred and George and Lee Jordan, and I woke up and just felt *so sad* that I could never actually meet them … which may sound pathetic, but such is my love of the books!!!

Anyway, my HP obsession aside, this looks like a great haul! The only books I’ve read here are Looking for JJ and Picture Me Gone – sad to say, I didn’t love either of them :/ Looking for JJ just didn’t do it for me, and Picture Me Gone was good but I had such ridiculously high expectations for it that it couldn’t meet them. You see, How I Live Now is one of my favourite books ever – it’s just so gorgeous and amazing, I can’t even express that book!! – and so Picture Me Gone fell a bit flat for me. Not that I’m trying to put you off! (Though if How I Live Now is one of the Meg Rosoff books you own – please read it. Please.)

Ah, this is a great haul, Lucy! I’ve been on a book buying ban (awesome alliteration, right?) for the past fortnight or so, and it’s so fricking hard! I went to Waterstones today and had to restrain myself. I’ve read The Rosie Project (which is BRILLIANT, by the way! Different but heart warming). As for Tales of Beedle the Bard, it’s just one of those things, as a HP die-hard, you feel the need to buy. I miss Ron. He’s my favourite. Also, those spectrespecs? Luna would be brimming with pride.

    Wonderful post, girl!

    Such a great haul, Lucy!

I really enjoyed ‘Looking for JJ’ by Anne Cassidy! It’s definitely thought-provoking and I’m sure you’ll love it! ‘Picture Perfect’ is a great sequel as well; New York is one of those places that I could read about constantly!

I’ve seen ‘The Rosie Project’ so many times in bookstores and have picked it up, read the blurb, and put it back down. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this one!

Hope you enjoy all of these!

    -Sophie 🙂

I received all three in your top picture too, Lucy:D Hope you enjoy all of them! I recently finished My Second Life. I loved the concept but found parts a bit too dialogue heavy … I’m in the minority of people who didn’t full enjoy it though, as other people’s reviews have been raving about it:D I’m hoping to start City of Halves soon, as it looks really awesome, but I’m not too sure how I’ll find it, as it sounds pretty much identical to TMI (hot tattooed boy, hidden side of a city, title beginning with City Of…) I hope you enjoy it!

The Rosie Project looks so good!

    Gee:)

Your haul looks so awesome! I recognized only the one by J.K. Rowling but all the covers are very pretty. I know that’s shallow but I really love books with beautiful covers. 🙂
