5 Female Authors I Adore

IMG_2079

In the wider book industry, female authors often get overlooked so it is super important to support them as much as possible. I thought I would compile a list of some of my favourite female authors today. They all write books that feature either feminism or female characters who stand out as being realistic and passionate.

Louise O’Neill – Only Ever Yours and Asking For It

Louise is one of the biggest YA talents out there at the moment and with the recent announcement that she’s been signed to write two adult books for Quercus, I’m really excited to read her future books. Only Ever Yours has earned Louise comparisons to the likes of Margaret Atwood, which is no mean feat, and it is set in a dystopian future where girls are genetically engineered to be perfect. They are then raised to please the men of this fictional world, which leads you to question our own society and just how far away the world in Only Ever Yours is from ours.

Asking For it deals with the subject of rape and consent. It’s extremely harrowing and a must-read for people of all ages. It draws attention to what it’s like to be a woman in the digital age and, although I didn’t love every second of reading it, I came away knowing just how important the book is.

Holly Bourne – Soulmates, The Manifesto On How to Be Interesting, Am I Normal Yet?

I read Soulmates a few years ago and fell in love with it. Each page gripped me and I couldn’t put it down. Since then, I’ve become a huge fan of Holly’s and she is one of the loveliest people you could wish to meet. It makes me very happy to see her books doing so well!

The book that I could talk all day about is Am I Normal Yet?. The first in a new series, it tells the story of a girl recovering from OCD and anxiety, and her journey as she tries to fit in and be “normal”. The best part of it for me was the feminist group that Evie and her two friends set up. It allows younger readers to test the waters of feminism without it being forced on them and it’s a book that I’ll be recommending to everyone.

Keris Stainton – Della Says: OMG!, Jessie Hearts NYC, Emma Hearts LA, Starring Kitty, Spotlight on Sunny, Counting Stars

I have been a fan of Keris’s books for many years and read my first book of hers, Jessie Hearts NYC, right when I first started blogging. Each of her books cater to a slightly different audience – Jessie, Emma, Starring Kitty and Spotlight on Sunny have some YA-MG crossover, whereas Della Says: OMG! and particularly Counting Stars are for an older YA audience. It’s nice to think that readers can grow up reading Keris’s books during some of the most important parts of their lives!

Her latest novel, Counting Stars, is her best yet. It’s about flatsharing, vlogging and has really awesome characters. Keris isn’t afraid to write honestly and this reflects in her characters. I loved every single one of them and reading about their lives! It’s definitely one of my favourite books now.

Lauren James – The Next Together

When I read The Next Together earlier in the year, I fell in love. Kate and Matthew are the cutest fictional couple ever and I can’t stop re-reading this book over and over again. The Next Together is the cutest book you’ll read all year and you’ll keep having to put it down to squeal all the time.

If you love time travel, romance and characters that you will want to take over and steal their lives (well, maybe not the reincarnation, doomed-love thing), then The Next Together is the book for you.

Catherine Doyle – Vendetta

In the front of Vendetta, Barry Cunningham, publisher at Chicken House, writes about how Vendetta is the best book he’s ever watched, and I second this a million times. Catherine has struck the balance right between brooding males, fast-paced action and a protagonist that I love.

I recently got to meet Cat and hear her speak at the Bath Children’s Literature Festival which was amazing. She’s even more lovely in real life than she is on Twitter, and it was great hearing about the writing of Vendetta.

Is it bad that I haven’t read any books by these authors? I do have Asking for It on hold at the library though, so at least I’m trying to remedy this. Your photo makes all these books look so pretty!!

My favourite female authors would have to be J.K. Rowling (always!) and Sarah J. Maas….

Sadly I didn’t really like The Next Together, and I’ve tried getting into Holly Bourne’s books but they just don’t work for me. However, I adored Only Ever Yours and can’t wait to read Asking for It.
Cat Clarke is one of my favourites and has been for a few years now; her books are so dark and refreshing. Also really loving Marissa Meyer’s books right now

I totally agree – I absolutely adore Holly Bourne. All of her books are so good and so important – Am I Normal Yet? is one of my favourites. I also love Louise O’Neill, but I’ve only read Only Ever Yours. It was one of my favourites, and I’m really looking forward to Asking For It. Great post, Lucy!

I can’t believe I haven’t read Holly Bourne yet, that needs to happen soon!

This is such a great roundup, female authors definitely don’t get as much praise or hype and these wonderful women all deserve every word of recommendation they get!
