5 Characters Everyone Loves But I Just Don’t Get | Top Ten Tuesday

top ten tuesday meme

I haven’t participated in the Top Ten Tuesday feature, hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, for a very long time, but I thought I’d start doing it again weekly because I love reading everyone’s posts.

This week the theme is: “Ten Characters Everyone Loves But I Just Don’t Get”. I haven’t chosen ten because usually I like most of the characters I read about, so here are just a few:

Severus Snape – Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND why anyone could like Snape. I must admit, I did see the appeal once I’d finished Deathly Hallows, but I don’t think a sudden spark of romance in the plot line can excuse his awful, abusive behaviour. He’s mean to Harry throughout his years at Hogwarts and constantly puts Hermione down, calling her an “insufferable know-it-all.” Is knowledge really something to be ashamed of?

Snape is never going to be a good person in my eyes.

Heathcliff – Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

Don’t even get me started on Heathcliff. He’s another character that is abusive – physically and mentally – and is romanticised way too often, thanks to adaptations portraying him as dark and brooding. His treatment of Cathy Linton, Hareton and Isabella was disgusting and how anyone could love him after that is crazy.

He deserves Catherine Earnshaw, in my opinion. They can run madly around the Moors together, as long as they’re nowhere near me.

Tiny Cooper – Hold Me Closer by David Levithan

I did like Tiny Cooper in David Levithan and John Green’s Will Grayson, Will Grayson but I just felt annoyed when I read the spin-off, Hold Me Closer. It seemed too over-the-top and unnecessary. I was not impressed!

Tiny Cooper is okay in short bursts, but a whole book? Never again.

Cinder – Cinder by Marissa Meyer

I enjoyed Cinder when I read it, but I’ve never been able to get past the first two books. I think this is because the characters didn’t steal my heart from me in a way that made me want to read on, so I’ve never persevered. It doesn’t matter how much action is going on, if I don’t like the characters then I’m not going to want to continue.

Lola and Cricket – Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins

I feel so bad about this choice because I’m a huge fan of Stephanie Perkins’s books, but Lola and the Boy Next Door fell a bit flat for me. I loved her first book, Anna and the French Kiss, so much but when it came to Lola, I felt as if something was missing. I’d still recommend it because Stephanie writes fantastically, but beware that the characters aren’t everything you could hope for.

What characters have you thinking everyone else is crazy for loving them? Are there any characters on my list that you love? Leave some love in the comments to let me know!

OMG SNAPE IS TOP OF MY LIST TOO!! XD I cannot understand the love for him…ugh. He is an abuser of children. Like kids who have done NOTHING TO HIM. When someone of power is an abuser there is just…no. There is no forgiving. (I also hate Dumbledore a little for LETTING Snape keep abusing the children. Like I do love Dumbledore BUT NO TO THAT. UGH.) Here’s my TTT!

OMG CINDER! ME TOO! Cinderella is probably my least favourite disney princess story, and she did NOT make it better! I thought Kai and her were your typical overdone romance, and I really did not like it. Things got a LOT better for me in book two, even though I haven’t read Cress yet.

    Have a lovely week, Lucy!

I have yet to read the last Harry Potter book but so far I cannot stand Snape either and I don’t know how he’s going to redeem himself! >.< I adore Cinder and Lola though! 🙂

I haven’t actually read any of the books in this list (I know, not even Harry Potter!), but I didn’t like Snape in the films. He never redeemed himself in my opinion, and his past didn’t excuse his behavior in the first few films! I actually DNFed Will Grayson, Will Grayson because it was just unbearable. I didn’t like Tiny Cooper either – he was so annoying!! I will never, EVER read Hold Me Closer – it sounds like my idea of hell 😉

Heathcliff was on my list too, but Snape I do love! I know he did a lot of sketchy things, but I think it’s easier to see how he did them out of loneliness and heartbreak. I mean, he didn’t have the easiest childhood.

I don’t like Snape because he “becomes good.” He never does, he can’t take back being a terrible person. In the end you get a glimpse into his complexity. You see that he’s not as terrible as you always thought. He’s still a bitter asshole but he’s a bitter asshole with depth if you analyze all the books with the newfound knowledge. Hermoine was insufferable at times and Harry reminded him of the boy who bullied him all through school and married the woman he loved entirely. He had conflicting emotions towards the boy being half of Lily and half of James. (I really didn’t like James too much from the little I saw of him.)

I love how many lists Heathcliff has made today! I can’t trust anyone who loves Heathcliff or thinks Wuthering Heights is an epic romance. Gag me.

Catherine and Heathcliffe are absolutely horrible stories, I actually look at them more as villains – not romantic figures.

I will never get that Snape gif out of my head now! XD

I totally agree with you on Lola and the boy next door, I was soooo disappointed with this book. But I have to admit that I hated Snape when I first read Harry Potter as a kid, but my feelings for him have changed since. I have re-read Harry Potter in February and I still love him dearly. I can’t even explain why.

I completely agree with Lola and Cricket. That was my least fav of the books. Tiny Cooper wasn’t so bad in Will Grayson but I can’t even imagine a whole book of him because he did seem over the top so I don’t plan on reading his play.

I am SO glad you feel the same about Lola and Cricket as I do. It was my least favourite of the books in the way that it drove me absolutely crazy and ruins the trilogy as a whole for me. I find that everyone says it’s their favourite but the characters just annoyed me way too much.

I only kind of agree with what you said about Cinder. I’m not keen on many of the characters (it’s the plot that keeps me going) but Thorne is one of my favourite characters in the world (so much so that I dedicated an entire post to him) and Cress is really great too! I’d encourage you to carry on reading because of Thorne but then I am a bit biased.
