REVIEW: Breathe by Abbi Glines

Sadie White’s summer job isn’t going to be on the beach life-guarding or working at rental booths like most kids her age. With her single mother’s increasing pregnancy and refusal to work, Sadie has to take over her mother’s job as a domestic servant for one of the wealthy summer families on a nearby island.

When the family arrives at their summer getaway, Sadie is surprised to learn that the owner of the house is Jax Stone, one of the hottest teen rockers in the world. If Sadie hadn’t spent her life raising her mother and taking care of the house she might have been normal enough to be excited about working for a rock star.

Even though Sadie isn’t impressed by Jax’s fame, he is drawn to her. Everything about Sadie fascinates Jax but he fights his attraction. Relationships never work in his world and as badly as he wants Sadie, he believes she deserves more. By the end of the summer, Jax discovers he can’t breathe without Sadie.
I was just casually strolling through the Kindle book store the other day when I saw this book and, having heard good things about the author, bought it. I was in the mood for a good romance and I was given it!
I really like the idea of the plot and it was a light read that I didn’t have to think too carefully about. The overall characterisation was good as well and I really loved characters such as Ms. Mary and Mr. Greg.
It isn’t one of my favourite books but I’m very eager to read more of Abbi Glines’ books as this one was enjoyable and fun.
I also liked the fact that Sadie was new to Sea Breeze and so we got to see it first-hand through her eyes. I also felt a great sympathy for her as her mother wasn’t the easiest person and she had brought herself up from an early age.
I really liked Jax and, although he isn’t one of my favourite love interests, he was certainly quite high on my list. He wasn’t the typical love interest and he had many unique points. Many of my favourite lines came from his mouth.
Is it weird that I actually wanted Marcus and Sadie to get together? I really liked Marcus and wanted him to have his chance with Sadie. But maybe I can imagine that, in my mind, they got together for a bit. Then Marcus won’t be too upset…
I got really annoyed in places about the constant use of the words “I’m afraid” and “however”. I also found that the characters spoke in a very formal way, something that teenagers nowadays wouldn’t do. Yes, this did irritate me, but in the scale of things it is only minor.
Look at that gorgeous cover! I love it! This would be a great addition to my bookshelf but sadly I’ve already bought it for my Kindle. Sometimes I don’t like actual people on the covers but the girl actually looks like what I imagine Sadie to look like and so it doesn’t really bother me. I also love the light cover and the writing really stands out.
I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the others in the Sea Breeze series.
RATING: 4/5 stars

My favourite quotes

‘You’re everything I write about in my songs but can never have.’

‘You got a boy right there who looks like he would drink your bathwater if you ask him.’

‘I’m here because the reason I get up each morning, needs me as much as I need her, obviously.’

Review: Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London’s Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.
Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What’s more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa’s power for his own.
Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm’s length . . . everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world. . . . and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

After loving the first three books in The Mortal Instruments series I was eager to read the first book in the prequel to one of my favourite series. I’m so glad I picked these books up as they are definitely one of my favourite series of the year!
At the start of the novel we are introduced to Tessa Gray, our leading lady, who has just got off of a boat from New York and has arrived in London. I was really glad that these series of books was written in England as I was familiar with the setting and knew some of the places. I was a little wary at first, what with it set around 130 years ago, but I soon felt at ease with the writing and the way it was written. You see, Cassandra Clare isn’t just one of my favourite authors because of the awesome characters featured in her books. No: she also manages to weave these beautifully crafted sentences to create a large plot that instantly drew me in to the life of William Herondale and James Carstairs, to English Shadowhunters who were just pure heaven.
I can’t believe I’m actually writing this but I think Will and Jem may just be a little better than Jace. I warmed to them a lot more and, even though there were many similarities between Jace and Will, I found Will much more appealing. I could understand him a little more and could also see reasons for why he did some of the things he did in the novels.
This is one of the first novels where I didn’t actually know whose team I was on! I really liked both Will and Jem equally and am looking forward to seeing more of them both in future novels.
Tessa was a great main character. I liked her a little more than I did Clary as she did irritate me at some points in City of Bones. Tessa was so brave and I often found myself thinking about my own reactions in that situation. To live in another country is one thing, but to do it alone is completely different!
I really liked the other characters as well such as Jessamine, Charlotte, Henry and Sophie. Although not the main characters they all had their own parts and I enjoyed reading about them. I also liked Church but…
Look at that amazing cover! The runes of my imagination have come to life! I actually took it to school and I had a few people ask about the cover. I really like it when the font on covers match the font on the inside of a book (I’m thinking of Hush, Hush here!) so that is a big bonus! Do you think you can get wallpaper with the book covers on? I wouldn’t mind staring at Will!
I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be reading the rest in the trilogy! It was pure magic (and not demon magic…)! If I could write half as well as Cassandra Clare then I know I would be a bestselling author! And to leave you on one final word: William Herondale.

Interview with Zoe from Bookhi

Today we have an interview with Zoe from Bookhi! I’m a massive fan of Zoe’s blog and am always stopping by so it is a huge honour to be able to interview her! She’s also a great bloggy friend of mine.
My questions in bold, Zoe’s answers in italics.

1. Why did you start blogging?

I started blogging simply because it looked fun. Once upon a time I was very bored so I started to browse the interweb, and stumbled across the book blogosphere. After a few weeks of being in awe of the people who owned them, I decided to start my own. I definitely won’t be bored again and I don’t regret it at all! When I first started, I didn’t even know that you could get sent books for review. I didn’t know what memes are and it took me a while to work out what ARCs and YA is (*blushes*). I have been blogging for two years but have only started blogging properly recently. I love to share my thoughts on books and talk to people who feel the same way.

2. So far, what is the best thing that has come out of blogging?

Definitely the people. Receiving a new follower and a comment always brightens my day and I love it when I receive positive feedback, especially when people post meaningful comment. I have made so many friends via the Internet and I just love to talk to people who are like me and love ranting about books. I only know a couple of people face to face who like reading and they don’t really like what I like, so it is awesome to come home from school and just blab about reading. I could ramble for ages about what I love about it, so I think I’ll stop now;)

3. Outside of your blogging life, what is your favourite thing to do?

Hmm… reading? 😉 If blogging and reading don’t count then I would have to say… writing. (hmm, also fairly predictable but oh well). I also love listening to music, spending time with my friends and family, karate and watch films. When I’m not blogging I am usually am watching TV though… especially Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Miranda, How I Met Your Mother, Victorious, Doctor Who and comedy panel shows.

4. What would you say to anyone who doesn’t like reading?

YOU DO REALLY! YOU JUST HAVEN’T TRIED A GOOD BOOK! *thrusts an amazing YA book at them and commands them to not speak until they have read it*
Well… that would be my preferred choice. I would probably say something like: Not all books are fantastic, some are amazing to some and boring to others. Find a book that is good for you and read more books of that genre/author. Reading isn’t nerdy or geeky or uncool, it is just going into a world that it so much better than yours and having adventures with characters. Books aren’t pure Shakespeare either – you will be surprised how books can influence your life.

5. If you could meet any fictional book character, who would it be?

Hermione Granger. I think I am a lot like her and she would be such a great person to know… and she would probably bring Harry and Ron along so I could meet them too! Hehe, loophole;)

6. When you first started blogging, did you expect to get where you are today?

Not at all! I still dream about having thousands of followers but I am happy with what I have achieved. I am not the best book blogger out there but I am still proud when an author/publisher want me to review their book. Like I mentioned before, when I started I hardly knew anything about the book blogosphere. And now… I don’t think I could live without it.

7. Do you have any advice to give to future book bloggers?

Create a blog asap! It is an amazing experience! Gather knowledge before you start a book blog so you can start off with a good blog. Make a sleek design that looks professional but not boring. And finally, blog because you love books, not for free books or any other bonuses. You may land yourself in a blogging slump but don’t lose faith, just take a break for a few weeks and come back fresh and relaxed. Good luck!

8. What are your favourite book blogs?

Do you have a few years? Because this may take a while…. get ready for the long list! Ahem. Booktastic Reviews, **Singing and Reading in the Rain**, Bookster Reviews, Never Judge a Book, Page-turner, The Book Parade, Realm of Fiction, A Reading Daydreamer, Blog of a Bookaholic, Alex’s Bookish Blog, Booked Up!, The Teen Book Guru, The Beaucoup Review, Ebony Black Lines, and (of course) YOURS! 😀

And now…

Favourites!

Book? Tricky… this changes every week but I’ll have to say The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. 🙂
TV Programme? The Big Bang Theory! 😀
Sport? I am not the biggest fan of sport but I do karate and I enjoy that.
Food? Pizza! 😛
Song? This changes all the time but I love the song How To Save a Life by The Fray. I also love anything by Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and The Script.

Thank you so much for interviewing me, Lucy! Great questions! 😀

British Books Challenge 2013

This year the British Books Challenge is being hosted by Sarah at Feeling Fictional. I wasn’t fortunate enough to participate in 2012 but I’m feeling quite confident for 2013.
Being British myself I’m looking forward to reading more UKYA books as most of the books I read are set in the US and I don’t know the settings as well. I’m also hoping to read a lot of historical fiction in 2013 as it’s something I am interested in.
You can find a record of all the books I have read towards the challenge here.

If you have any suggestions for books I would love to hear them!

Discussion: Why do I read?

Why do I read? In today’s society, if I tell someone that I like reading then I usually get sneered at. So why do I read?
1. When I read I can go somewhere else for a while and be someone different.
This is the one of the main reasons that I read so much. If I’m having a bad day then I can pick up a book and forget all about it. I can become a book character! When am I ever going to be able to get the chance to be with Jace Wayland, other than when I’m reading City of Bones?
2. Reading improves your vocabulary.
My teacher is always telling people this when they say they aren’t very good at reading. Without reading I wouldn’t know amazing words like, “Shadowhunter”, “Stonewylde” and “Etienne St. Clair.”
On a more serious note, I don’t think I’d have a very big word range if I didn’t read. Why use the word ‘big’ when you can use the word ‘ginormous’ or ‘humongous’?
3. Reading helps with subjects other than English.
I’m especially grateful to my reading habits when I’m writing a history essay or a piece of homework set in a  class other than English. I certainly find that I can decipher Maths questions much better than some other people who don’t read: you will have a better grasp on the words if you have a bigger vocabulary.
4. Reading offers opportunities

Through my blog (and so through reading) I have had the opportunity to talk to other like-minded people and authors. There are also book groups in my local area that I may join in the future.
5. Reading opens your mind.

From Fallen Angels to Hybrids, I’ve read about them all. Reading certain books makes you think about different worlds, universes. Maybe this is why Dystopian is so big at the moment. We all like to wonder what life would be like and so to see words on paper that mirror your own thoughts is remarkable.
6. I wouldn’t be sane without books!

It’s true: I would not be sane without books! Books inspire me and when I’m reading a book I feel safe. Books have shaped who I am and, from reading books, I am constantly learning about different things: life lessons, geeky facts, dystopic worlds.
I am very grateful to books like Twilight and The Hunger Games because people, whoever they may be, pick them up and can feel a connection with the words. If you visited one of my English reading lessons then I can guarantee that you will find at least three people reading one of the above books. And whenever I see someone reading a book and enjoying it a smile creeps up on to my face because I know the pleasure that reading gives me.

There Comes a Prophet Blog Tour- Guest Post + Giveaway

Writing a novel – how do you start?

Stephen King once wrote: ”The scariest moment is always just before you start.” If that’s the view of the master of horror and author of over fifty books, beginning a novel must be scary indeed.

There’s nothing more intimidating than a blank page. Long before I write that first word, I try to come up with at least one compelling character. (Okay, this may involve lots of words, but in my ‘notes’ file, not the novel itself). Then I spend a number of weeks getting to know that character. I think about them as I go for long walks, envision them in my dreams. I try to place myself in their head, to see the world they live in through their eyes, to hear the sounds they hear, to breathe in their air.

Next comes the plot. I try to discover what that character really wants, then make it hard for them to get.

Over time, I’ve heard other authors talk about how they picture the start of a story. One claimed he sends his characters up a tree and throws rocks at them until they find a way to come down. I heard Michael Palmer, the writer of medical thrillers, say he imagines a cannibal’s cauldron, puts his characters into it, lights the fire and nails down a cover on top of them. Then he watches them figure a way out.

Sol Stein, one of the great editors of all time, in his book, Stein on Writing, talks about the crucible, which he describes as “the container that holds the characters together as things heat up.” According to Stein, “characters caught in a crucible won’t declare a truce and quit. They’re in it till the end.”

I write dystopian fiction and think about it a bit differently. I like to create characters with an intense aversion to the dark, place them in the darkest place I can find and watch them fight their way back to the light.

Author Bio

The urge to write first struck when working on a newsletter at a youth encampment in the woods of northern Maine. It may have been the night when lightning flashed at sunset followed by northern lights rippling after dark. Or maybe it was the newsletter’s editor, a girl with eyes the color of the ocean. But he was inspired to write about the blurry line between reality and the fantastic.
Using two fingers and lots of white-out, he religiously typed five pages a day throughout college and well into his twenties. Then life intervened. He paused to raise two sons and pursue a career, in the process becoming a well-known entrepreneur in the software industry, founding several successful companies. When he found time again to daydream, the urge to write returned. There Comes a Prophet is his first novel in this new stage of life.
David and his wife split their time between Cape Cod, Florida and anywhere else that catches their fancy. He no longer limits himself to five pages a day and is thankful every keystroke for the invention of the word processor.
