REVIEW: Dead Romantic by C.J. Skuse

Summary (from Goodreads):

Camille wants to find the perfect boy, with an athlete’s body and a poet’s brain.

But when she’s mocked at a college party, she kows there isn’t a boy alive who’ll ever measure up.

Enter Zoe, her brilliant but strange best friend, who takes biology homework to a whole new level. She can create Camille’s dream boy, Frankenstein-stylee.
But can she make him love her?

Beforehand I was really interested in the concept of this novel. It promised me the chance to finally be able to read a C.J. Skuse novel and I wasn’t disappointed.
In this novel, Skuse has created a funny, modern retelling of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. After meeting a girl in a graveyard, Camille suddenly becomes fascinated by her. So when the girl, Zoe, brings a group of once dead hamsters back to life, she then tells Camille that she could create the perfect boy for her. But will it all go smoothly? After all, there’s no such thing as a happily ever after…
As the main character, Camille was interesting and funny. Some of the things she did made me laugh so much that people started looking at me a little weirdly. Maybe I shouldn’t have been reading it in my English reading lesson… She was a typical teenage girl; one of those people who are desperate for someone to fall in love with them. Strangely, I didn’t find her annoying. I thought that because of her desperation it might get on my nerves but it didn’t. Camille was simply herself and I managed to brush away all preconceptions I had at the start of the novel.
Zoe was our Doctor Frankenstein and I thought she was a very compelling character. I actually felt very sympathetic towards her because the events leading up to the novel were sad and heartfelt. I couldn’t help but wonder what she would have been like if she had led a normal life. But we wouldn’t have a novel if that were the case!
One of my favourite characters was actually Pee Wee! I mean, who can resist a cute puppy?!
Damian was a character that I wanted to slap. Yes, he got better in the end but if he were real then I think I would have to move to another continent. This isn’t a bad thing though as I believe this is what the author intended.

I really loved the idea of creating a perfect boy! It’s something that people dream of and to bring that idea to life in the form of a novel is something that I think people will enjoy reading about.

Dead Romantic is a book about love, heartache and monstrous ideas. It’s something that I would recommend to anybody.

GUEST POST: Emma from Never Judge a Book by It’s Cover

Lucy over at Queen of Contemporary asked me to do a guest post for her blog and I was honoured to do so. My topic of the guest post is Blogging Friends. Myself and Lucy were both talking about how much friends help and support you and make blogging a whole new bigger experience. I believe she said: “THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY FULL OF AWESOMENESS” and I totally agree.

Aside from my friends I have daily, who unfortunately like most bloggers, they tend not to be so enthusiastic about YA books in general. From the making of my blog; Never Judge a Book by its Cover I had met some amazing people to help me get started and into the blogging community. They really did welcome me with open arms, as they say. But the friendliest social network is Twitter. I have never been so addicted to a social network, before; Facebook went right through the window. Over Twitter I have a group of friends that I really can’t stop talking about books to:

Zoe at BookHi Blog, Kyra at Blog of a Bookaholic, Jessica at Booked Up and Lucy of course. It’s amazing what you can do with a group of friends such as mine… So far I’ve done read-alongs and author interviews which has been by far the most amazing experience so far. But what it does it brings you closer to book and to think that are many more of us enjoy our passion of reading. What’s nice as well, we are in the 21st Century, Print books are still the favourite between physical and eBook.

Friends support you, guide you, help you and most of all make your life that much different, unique and more amazing every day. Especially if you have a bad day, you know that your friends whether they are close to you or only a tweet away that they will brighten your day!

A book will always be a girl’s best friend, but (Blogging) fiends are like stars, you don’t always see them, but you know they are always there.

REVIEW: Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan

Summary:

“I’ve left some clues for you.
If you want them, turn the page.
If you don’t, put the book back on the shelf, please.”

So begins the latest whirlwind romance from the bestselling authors ofNick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Lily has left a red notebook full of challenges on a favorite bookstore shelf, waiting for just the right guy to come along and accept its dares. But is Dash that right guy? Or are Dash and Lily only destined to trade dares, dreams, and desires in the notebook they pass back and forth at locations across New York? Could their in-person selves possibly connect as well as their notebook versions? Or will they be a comic mismatch of disastrous proportions?

Rachel Cohn and David Levithan have written a love story that will have readers perusing bookstore shelves, looking and longing for a love (and a red notebook) of their own.

I was accepted to review this book on Netgalley the day after I ordered it so I’m glad that it was worth it.
Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares is set in New York and follows the lives of both Dash and Lily. After her parent’s abandon her at Christmas with her brother, Lily is at a bit of an odd end, and so when her brother suggests leaving a notebook leaving clues in her favourite section of The Strand bookshop, Lily patiently waits for her ‘true love’ to turn up.
Enter Dash. Lodging between his parents homes he comes across a mysterious notebook and follows the steps written in them. Why not?
There starts a journey across New York with Dash and Lily setting each other dares to complete.
One of the things I loved most about this novel was this it was believable. The streets of New York were described in such a way that they were vivid and clear, even to someone who has never been to New York.
I liked that Lily was a little eccentric and different. She was quirky and I felt as if I knew her well. She didn’t have many faults, actually, but that didn’t make her seem ‘perfect.’ She was just the sort of character that I wanted to hug.
Dash wasn’t your typical YA male. I found him different and he suited Lily for exactly that reason.
This contemporary was a little different to the ones I usually read. Most are set in high schools now and so it was good to read something that wasn’t the norm. It had a solid plot and interesting characters that willed me to read on. This book would actually be a great movie!
I thoroughly enjoyed it and can’t wait to read other books by the two authors. If you want romance, adventure and a good laugh then don’t hesitate to pick this up.

Showcase Sunday (3)

Showcase Sunday is hosted by Vicky at Books, Biscuits and Tea and allows bloggers to showcase their book hauls.

I’ve decided to do Showcase Sunday this week instead of Stacking the Shelves as I really want to find new bloggers and a lot of the same people join in with STS.
I also didn’t have enough time to photograph on Friday night and I like to join in on the day that the meme is posted.
I haven’t received many books this week compared to last because I haven’t been to the library but I’m really pleased with the books that I did get.
Amazon Book Haul:
I don’t normally order books online but I couldn’t get these two at any local bookshops and wanted to read them so I decided that ordering once wouldn’t hurt.
From What I Remember by Stacy Kramer and Valerie Thomas- This books sounds really good. The plot sounds funny and I can’t wait to start it. And it’s contemporary! Bonus!
The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith- I’ve wanted to read this for a while now and so I’m really pleased that I’ve finally got it. And it’s another contemporary!
Review Haul:
I received three books to review this week and I love all of them! Thank you Chicken House, Macmillan and Spinebreakers.
Vortex by Julie Cross- I received Tempest last week and after loving it, Macmillan offered me the second book in the trilogy to read. And I couldn’t stop myself from kissing the cover! Thank you Macmillan!
Dead Romantic by C.J. Skuse- I was so lucky to get this book! I read it for the blog tour that I’m participating in and I loved it. Thank you Chicken House!
1984 by George Orwell- I read the first few paragraphs of this novel earlier this month and was fascinated so I was really pleased when this was one of the options I could pick from as part of the Spinebreakers team. And I love the cover! Thank you, Spinebreakers!
Other:

The Quick Expert’s Guide to Writing a Blog- I’ve wanted to get my hands on this book since I heard that one of my best blogging buddies, Zoe, was featured in it. It’s a book full of great tips and is a really good guide to those who want to start a blog.
What books did you receive this week?

DISCUSSION: Vlogging and Why I’ll Never Be Able To Do It

I have a huge problem with vlogs. It’s not that I don’t like watching the videos. Actually, I love watching them. It’s just that I am insanely jealous of the people who make them.
Some of my favourite vloggers, also known as ‘booktubers,’ can keep me occupied for ages.
Some of my favourites are…
CassJayTuck
polandbananasBOOKS

booksandquills

So what do all of these booktubers have in common? Here are some things that I think are important for vlogging.

1. You must have a clear voice. If I don’t understand you then how am I supposed to follow what you’re saying?!

2. You have to know what you’re talking about. If you keep muttering or stumbling then I won’t believe what you’re saying

3. Be confident. The viewer will be happy watching you if you don’t hide your face! We’ll also feel more comfortable because if you’re confused, we will be too!

Do you have any vlogging tips?

DISCUSSION: Book Trends

With the rise of The Hunger Games and Twilight we have all had our taste of Vampire and Dystopian novels. But what are my book trend predictions for the upcoming year?

Since the release of The Hunger Games early in 2012 I have noticed a boom in Dystopian novels. I’ve loved a lot of these (Breathe, Divergent etc.) but is there a limit? It seems that a lot of these books are covering the same topics and same plot lines now and so I’m looking forward to reading something else.
There are some major book adaptions hitting the big screen this year and I am really looking forward to walking in to my English class and seeing people reading these.
Most of these movies are fantasy based and I am going to be pleased to see something other than the dark Vampire covers in bookshops. With Beautiful Creatures being released next month I think that we will be seeing a lot more paranormal type books. We also have The Host movie which will also see a rise.

Downton Abbey is huge all around the world and so I think that this may increase the number of historical novels out there. I’ve already seen quite a few pop up. Personally, I think that this is a good thing as I’m a massive historical fiction geek!

What do you think? Are there any book trends that you would like to see?

REVIEW: Tempest by Julie Cross

The year is 2009. Nineteen-year-old Jackson Meyer is a normal guy… he’s in college, has a girlfriend… and he can travel back through time. But it’s not like the movies – nothing changes in the present after his jumps, there’s no space-time continuum issues or broken flux capacitors – it’s just harmless fun. That is… until the day strangers burst in on Jackson and his girlfriend, Holly, and during a struggle with Jackson, Holly is fatally shot. In his panic, Jackson jumps back two years to 2007, but this is not like his previous time jumps. Now he’s stuck in 2007 and can’t get back to the future.
Desperate to somehow return to 2009 to save Holly but unable to return to his rightful year, Jackson settles into 2007 and learns what he can about his abilities.
But it’s not long before the people who shot Holly in 2009 come looking for Jackson in the past, and these “Enemies of Time” will stop at nothing to recruit this powerful young time-traveler. Recruit… or kill him.
Piecing together the clues about his father, the Enemies of Time, and himself, Jackson must decide how far he’s willing to go to save Holly… and possibly the entire world.

It is safe to say that I really wasn’t expecting to enjoy Tempest as much as I did. I thought that my rating would probably be a four so when I rated it 5 stars once I’d finished it I was very happy. I didn’t know a lot about the plot, but the little information I did know intrigued me.

Jackson has a secret: he is a time traveler. I haven’t actually read any books about time travel before and so I was a little apprehensive, but I actually found the concept interesting and thrilling. We first meet Jackson in 2009 where he likes to carry out time-traveling experiments with his friend, Adam. There is also the small issue of his girlfriend, Holly, who doesn’t know about his gift.

As an exciting character, I enjoyed reading the novel from Jackson’s point of view. I don’t know what I expected, but I really didn’t think it would be told from his view. I realise that this was a bit stupid of me as it really couldn’t have been written in anyone else’s. Throughout the novel, Jackson really transformed and even though I liked him from the first page, I loved him at the end. He was so calm and focused and was admirable for that reason. I wouldn’t act like that if I was in that situation!
Holly was a generally sweet character who I enjoyed learning about. The thing I most liked about her was her maturity and ability to stay cool in difficult situations (she was definitely in a few!). What set her apart from other YA characters was the fact that she was natural. Some authors make their characters perfect in every way but the characters in Tempest were true to real life.
Adam was likable and, although not one of the main characters, he felt just as important as Jackson and Holly, and also had his own role.

This novel kept me constantly on my toes, anticipating the plot line and it made me think: Is being normal so bad? Would I really want the pressure that Jackson had?

I really can’t wait to read Vortex as the ending of Tempest left me shocked. Why are authors so cruel to us?! How am I going to cope now, not knowing what happens?!
