Review- The Iron King by Julie Kagawa

Meghan Chase has a secret destiny; one she could never have imagined.

Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan’s life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home.

When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she’s known is about to change.

But she could never have guessed the truth – that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she’ll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

I’d heard some great things about this book prior to reading it and really wanted to try it out for myself. I really loved The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa and really wanted to pick up another piece of her writing. I really love the cover: it’s eye-capturing and interesting and I wish I’d bought it in physical form rather than on my Kindle so that I could really admire the cover properly.

I didn’t enjoy this book as much as The Immortal Rules and found it quite slow at the start. The writing irritated me a little bit as well and I found that I didn’t quite get in to it. There was a part of me that just didn’t want to like this book. It did, however, get better.

When we first met Meagan I began to like her. I didn’t love her immediately but she did warm to me. She’s nothing compared to Allison Sekemoto from The Immortal Rules, but they’re completely different characters.  I did feel a little sorry for her, what with her mum and Luke always forgetting about her. I wouldn’t have liked that if I were her.
Puck! Yay for Puck! I really liked Puck, I didn’t go crazy and love him in a ‘I want to faint at your feet’ way but I did really like him. He cared for Meagan and that’s what really matters.
The book got ten times more amazing when Ash was introduced. Yes, Ash. Ash is amazing. I just want to read about him all day! He was a completely awesome love interest and I instantly warmed to him.

The plot was really interesting and I loved reading all about the faery realm and the mythology and folklore.  I’ll definitely be reading the rest in the series (how could I resist Ash?!)

Overall I really enjoyed reading this, and although it isn’t one of my favourites, I would highly recommend it, especially to people who enjoyed the Wings series by Aprilynne Pike or Lament by Maggie Stiefvater.

Feature and Follow Friday (3)

Feature and Follow is hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. It allows us book bloggers to show off our blogs and gain new followers!

Q: What is a deal breaker for you in a book? For example, do you abhor love triangles? Or can’t deal with bad editing?

If I don’t like the opening sentences of a book then I find that I’m not able to enjoy as much as possible. I have no idea why this is but the opening sentences really show what the book is going to be about and whether it is worth reading.
For example:
Matched by Allie Condie- Now that I’ve found the way to fly, which direction should I go in to the night? My wings aren’t white or feathered; they’re green, made of green silk, which shudders in the wind and bends when I move- first in a circle, then in a line, finally in a shape of my own invention. The black behind me doesn’t worry me; neither do the stars ahead.
Verdict: When I first read this it really confused me. It doesn’t introduce the story well and doesn’t set you straight on to the story line.

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver- They say that before you die your whole life flashes before your eyes, but that’s not how it happened for me.
Verdict: This immediately interested me and tells you that the story is going to be based around the main character’s death. It sets you on the story line and makes you want to read on.

Wildthorn by Jane Eagland- The carriage jolts and splashes along the rutted lanes flooded by the heavy November rains.
Verdict: I find this opening quite boring and, although I found myself asking questions, I didn’t really want to read on.

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater- I remember lying in the snow, a small red spot of warm going cold, surrounded by wolves.
Verdict: I love this opening sentence. It’s definitely one of my favourites and makes me want to read on. I was immediately enthralled and it sets you on the story line quickly.

In Focus- The Stonewylde Series by Kit Berry

I’m going to be starting a ‘book’s in focus’ weekly post here on the blog and to start I’m going to be focusing on the Stonewylde series by Kit Berry, because they are my favourite book series of all time.
Hidden in deep Dorset is a community like none other: Stonewylde. It’s self-sufficient and cut off from the Outside World. The community lives by the old ways, honouring the ancestors of past.
But all is not as it seems at Stonewylde. There are two types of people: Hallfolk and Villagers.
The Hallfolk all live grandly at the Hall with modern gadgets and access to the Outside World.
The Villagers, however, live down in the Village, living lives like their medieval ancestors: no electricity for them!
We first meet the characters of Stonewylde in the first novel, Magus of Stonewylde.
Sylvie is dying. A victim of crippling allergies and poisoned by the pollution and chemicals of modern life, she’s trapped in a hospital bed while her mother and doctors watch her life slipping away. But one of them offers her a chance.
There’s an alternative community – Stonewylde – hidden away behind high boundary walls in a corner of Dorset. If their leader, the charismatic Magus, would let Sylvie visit then perhaps the clean air and green lifestyle may restore her vitality – or at least give her some measure of peace before she dies. It’s a chance, and when Sylvie and her mother take it, they find themselves in a haven of tranquillity and beauty.
But it’s not all idyllic. The Magus sends a moody, secretive Village boy to work in their garden as a punishment. He warns the newcomers to stay away from the boy, who’s rebellious and in deep trouble. But Sylvie is curious about Yul and, as their forbidden friendship grows, she sees that all is not quite as it seems at Stonewylde.
Why was she told to keep away from Yul – and why is everyone so drawn to the Magus? Is the crone on the hill really a powerful wise-woman, or just a mad old hag bent on destroying the peace with her wild prophecies? And what exactly is the magical secret at the heart of this seemingly perfect community?

In total there are five books in the series: Magus of Stonewylde, Moondance of Stonewylde, Solstice at Stonewylde, Shadows at Stonewylde and Shaman of Stonewylde.
Throughout the month of November I will be reviewing all of the books in the series by Kit Berry, so please check back for them.
I hope you enjoy!

Review- Blood to Blood by Ife Oshun

Angelika Brown has a killer voice. Too bad her über-conservative parents aren’t happy when she decides to quit high school to be a pop singer. What’s worse, she’s morphing into a blood-drinking immortal and her soaring vocals can now destroy everything, and everyone, within earshot. Will she learn how to control her new powers? Or will her bloodlust cause her to kill her girl group before they reach the Top 10?

I was offered this book to review as part of a blog tour and having not heard of it before was a little sceptical. The blurb is also a little vague and I had no idea what I was about to pick up. But I started it straight away and had it finished within a few days! I really loved it! It’s the perfect mix of Twilight and The Immortal Rules and I completely devoured it!
It was a little slow starting but you immediately get set on the plot line and once you get in to it, it is clear that the book is going to be amazing! It offers a great new look at the Vampire world which can be a little predictable after Twilight which worried me a little: you never know what you are getting in to with Vampire books. But this was completely different!
The main character, Angel Brown, is lovable and sweet, if not a little blood-thirsty! I loved reading about her transformation from human to vampire and watching her struggle to come to terms with her evergrowing thirst for human blood.
And now I shall talk about Sawyer Creed. Isn’t that just an awesome name? I really loved him, right from the start! I was screaming at Angel to love him like I loved him! What made this romance believable was that Angel didn’t instantly like him: she actually hated him, even when she hadn’t met him! No insta-love in this book!
I don’t know a lot about the music industry but this gave a lovely insight in to the music world and I felt very comfortable reading about it.
I also really loved the idea of a ‘blood bank’ where the Vampires go to feed off humans. It’s not something that I’ve read about before and it was great to read about something new.
The settings were believable and enjoyable to read.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am hoping that there will be a second book for me to devour! It was well-written and had a story line that I loved!

Review- What’s Left of Me by Kat Zhang

Imagine that you have two minds, sharing one body. You and your other self are closer than twins, better than friends. You have known each other forever.

Then imagine that people like you are hated and feared. That the government want to hunt you down and tear out your second soul, separating you from the person you love most in the world.
Now meet Eva and Addie.
They don’t need to imagine.

First let me try and describe to you just how excited I was to read this book. I told anyone who would listen and wanted to make at least 30 posts here on the blog. I’m actually feeling incredibly excited just writing this post and I’ve already read the book! I think I actually squealed when picking this book up in Waterstones (let’s hope nobody saw me!). I’d watched the book trailer and ABSOLUTELY FELL IN LOVE WITH IT!  Is it really possible to love a book before having read it?
I really loved the opening of the book as we met Eva and Addie.
The first sentence is amazing: ‘Addie and I were born into the same body, our souls’ ghostly fingers entwined before we gasped our first breath.’
How amazing is that?! If I don’t like an opening sentence then I’m not likely to enjoy the book as much as possible. I have no idea why but it’s true!
I preferred Eva to Addie as I found Addie annoying at times and quite selfish. Eva was very admirable, having to put up with her sister controlling their body for two whole years. I think I would have gone crazy! Eva, as the recessive soul, has to watch everything through her sister’s eyes and the only way she can speak is through her sister. The way in which they communicated in the novel was completely unique and I loved it. They had such a great bond and relationship and, although I didn’t like Addie all the way through the novel, seeing how much Eva loved her helped me a little to like her a bit more.
I think I actually enjoyed the beginning more than when there was action going on. I was happy to just stroll along with Eva and Addie and don’t think I actually enjoyed the scenes in the hospital as much as the scenes when they are at home and everything is fine. However, it was written beautifully and this really made me want to read more and more of the amazing words.

This novel is not, as some people may think, Dystopian. It is actually set in an alternate version of the 21st century. When I was reading the novel I was always wondering what would happen if this was actually true. Who would my other half be? My twin? What would they be like? Would we settle? Which one of us would be the dominant?
I love books that make me feel this way, make me feel the worry that the Hybrids face. They were put in such difficult circumstances and I felt so sympathetic towards them.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and it was written amazingly. The carefully crafted world makes you fall easily in to the body of Eva and Addie and really feel what they are feeling. Sometimes I felt a little detached from the writing which is why I haven’t rated it higher but I would really recommend this book to anyone: reader or non-reader.

Interview- Sophie from A Day Dreamers World

Today on the blog we have an interview Sophie from A Day Dreamers World

Welcome to the blog, Sophie! First of all, what was the inspiration behind your blog?

I saw that one of my old friends had made a blog and I had tried out Tumblr but wanted something where I could post about books and do some writing. I guess this means my inspiration was my love of books and the fact that I have always loved writing.

If you could be the author of any book, which book would it be?

It would have to be The Hunger Games, as this is my favourite book and I love everything about it. The way it has such a strong lead character Katniss that is so brave and powerful. Then it tackles such important subjects like war and famine but in this exhilarating, fantastically told book!

Who is your favourite author, and why?

It would be between Suzanne Collins because The Hunger Games, as above, is so fantastic and Katniss is such a powerful character but I also love S.C Ransom author of the Small Blue Thing Trilogy because she writes such beautiful novels.

What is your favourite genre?

Dystopian and Young Adult Fiction!
If you could write a novel, what would it be about?

It would be so difficult to choose because I always seem to pick up a pen and right whatever idea is in my head at that moment. It would probably be about a teenage girl who is in a tough situation and who is fighting for something she loves.

Do you have any words of advice for anyone who wants to create a book blog?

Just write what you want to write, don’t try to please everyone, start with yourself. Basically write about what you love.

And, saving the hardest question for last, what is your favourite book/ series?

The Hunger Games of course!

Thanks for doing this interview, Sophie!

Thanks for letting me!

Review- The Luxe by Anna Godbersen

Pretty girls in pretty dresses, partying until dawn.
Irresistible boys with mischievous smiles and dangerous intentions.
White lies, dark secrets, and scandalous hookups.
This is Manhattan, 1899. Beautiful sisters Elizabeth and Diana Holland rule Manhattan’s social scene. Or so it appears. When the girls discover their status among New York City’s elite is far from secure, suddenly everyone–from the backstabbing socialite Penelope Hayes, to the debonair bachelor Henry Schoonmaker, to the spiteful maid Lina Broud–threatens Elizabeth’s and Diana’s golden future.
With the fate of the Hollands resting on her shoulders, Elizabeth must choose between family duty and true love. But when her carriage overturns near the East River, the girl whose glittering life lit up the city’s gossip pages is swallowed by the rough current. As all of New York grieves, some begin to wonder whether life at the top proved too much for this ethereal beauty, or if, perhaps, someone wanted to see Manhattan’s most celebrated daughter disappear…
In a world of luxury and deception, where appearance matters above everything and breaking the social code means running the risk of being ostracized forever, five teenagers lead dangerously scandalous lives. This thrilling trip to the age of innocence is anything but innocent.
-From Goodreads
I had seen this book in a bookshop a while ago but didn’t buy it as the blurb was very vague (not the one above, but the one on the actual book!) However, after taking out from my library I wish I had bought it in the first place! I really enjoy historical fiction and this book was informative and thrilling, giving just the right insight in to 19th century Manhattan.
There were a lot of characters introduced at the start of the book and I was a little worried that it would get confusing and over-complicated. Whereas at the start this was the case I quickly felt that I was actually in Manhattan and knew the characters personally.
Elizabeth Holland was a very interesting character and one that I admired. She seemed sweet and innocent from the outside, but she was actually tough and incredibly naughty! She was a very likeable character and I felt for her very deeply and found that I reached a great understanding of her character.
Elizabeth’s sister, Diana, was also a character that I loved. She added a new dimension to the book that would have been lost if she hadn’t have been added. I really liked her personality, which was so different to her sister’s!
Now to the love interests! I really loved Will, although we didn’t see much of him. I really wish we had seen more of him as it would have really captured me.
Henry Schoonmaker! What can I say? He was totally swoon-worthy and I really enjoyed reading about him! Okay, so maybe not one of my favourite love interests but he’s right up there on the list!
I absolutely love the cover! How amazing is it?! That dress is just divine! It’s really eye capturing and if I were to see it in a bookshop would instantly check it out! The title is big which gives it instant recognition and so is the author’s name. The picture above really doesn’t give it justice!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be reading the others in the series! I would highly recommend it to anyone who is a great lover of historical fiction- and those who would like to try it but haven’t yet! Just please, READ THIS BOOK! You won’t regret it!
